Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr

by Ahmed from Beirut, Lebanon

"God and Nature first made us what we are, and then out of our own created genius we make ourselves what we want to be. Follow always that great law. Let the sky and God be our limit and Eternity our measurement."

These are Inspiring words spoken by the great Marcus Garvey. A man not afraid to unchain himself and his people from the chains that are enslaving Africans to this day. He brought pride and honour back to the African people that were being degraded throughout the world. He was determined and did not rest until his vision of redemption to Africans was fulfilled. This is my hero, a fearless revolutionary fighting for my people and with the power of speech.

Marcus Garvey was born in St Ann's Bay, Jamaica, on August 17, 1887. When he was 14 he left school and worked as a printer's assistant. He contributed in Jamaica's earliest nationalist organizations. A few years later Marcus was invited by Booker T. Washington to come to the USA in anticipation of establishing an industrial training school but unfortunately Garvey arrived just after Washington's death. Garvey stayed in the USA and organized the opening of a new branch of his committees Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League. The UNIA & ACL had been formed by Garvey in Jamaica in 1914. The purpose of these organizations was to uplift Black people everywhere and the redemption of Africa. It was targeted to obtain racial pride and self reliance and economic independence from the "white invaders."

Marcus Garvey is known as the provisional king of Africa. He was the inspiration of many people. He promoted racial pride to all Africans. He did all in his power to bring justice to Africa and all Africans. He organized committees in order to unify Africans; he also offered trips to Africa to the Africans that wanted to go home. Marcus Garvey is know to be the prophet of Rastafarianism because he addressed many issues including the attempts by Europeans to separate Ethiopia from the rest of Africa and promoted Africa's social and political independence from colonial rule, and he emphasized the crowning of his Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie, and his majesty's greatness. "In my opinion, Marcus Garvey was the greatest organizer of African people ever in the western hemisphere," -Sundiata Acoli. My hero teaches us that we must all be proud of our heritage and never forget who we are and where we come from.

I choose my hero Marcus Garvey because I soon want to be a revolutionary, unifying all Africans and bringing the proud and rich eroded African heritage back to life, as I struggle everyday in Lebanon with racial problems. I want to free my people from encountering these mental and hurtful obstacles by introducing them to a place where you cannot be discriminated by the colour of your skin, our homeland Africa.

My hero Marcus Garvey was a great man that struggled with being imprisoned for what he believed in. He was determined and didn't give up. During this process I learned that to be proud of what you are is very important. It allows your mind to flip through your pages of wisdom. Be proud of what you are because life is short. Its too valuable to waste on hating how god created you.
