Milton Hershey was born on Sep. 13, 1857 near Derry Church, Pennsylvania on a farm. He was the only surviving child of Fannie and Henry Hershey. He was raised by his mom in the discipline of the Mennonite faith. Hershey got limited education because his family moved a lot. He sadly only finished the fourth grade.
Hershey became fascinated with German chocolate-making machinery shown at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. He began making a variety of chocolate creations after buying the equipment for his Lancaster plant. In order to concentrate on his chocolate business, Hershey sold the Lancaster Caramel Co. for $1 million in 1990. He returned to Derry church to build a new factory three years later. There, he could make fine delicious chocolate with fresh milk.
Milton was determined to develop a formula for milk chocolate to sell to the American public. He made the largest chocolate manufacturing plant. HERSHEY'S milk chocolate became the first nationally marketed product of its kind.
"Milton Hershey established The M.S. Hershey Foundation, a small, private charitable foundation to provide educational and cultural opportunities for local residents. The Foundation supports three entities: Hershey Museum and Hershey Gardens, the Hershey Theater and the Hershey Community Archives."
Milton is a hero because he made really good chocolate. >.< =P
