by Abby from Williamsville

My hero is Milton Hershey. Milton Hershey falls in the category for business. Milton Hershey is a hero because he created delicious candy(s) for people all around the world to enjoy. He also helped many children and teens. Milton was sad that so many young children and teens didn't have homes, so he built an orphanage for them. People all around the world were inspired by Milton because he helped so many people. People were also inspired by Milton, because his life was 86% problems. Milton faced the problems, and turned them into good things. That is why Milton Hershey is a hero.

Milton had a very unique childhood. First, Milton was born on September 13, 1857. Second, Milton lived with his mother, Fanny, his father, Henry, and his little sister, Serena. Sadly, when Milton was eleven, Serena died. No one knew how or why. Milton and his family lived through the Civil War, which was a bloody war. Milton had to work hard on the family farm, throughout his whole childhood. When it was a Saturday, Milton would grab his saved pennies and go pick something out at the candy shop. Milton loved candy as a kid, and throughout his whole life. When it wasn't a Saturday, Milton would go to school and then come home and work on the farm again. Milton attended 6 different schools, by the time he was 13 years old. As you can see, Milton had a very unique childhood.

Milton had many accomplishments/contributions. Milton also did many things for the community. One of Milton's accomplishments is that Milton invented a new kind of caramel,s called "Crystal A" with a little help from a caramel maker. Another one of Milton's accomplishments is that he also invented "McGinties" and "Lotuses" all by himself with no help. The third thing that Milton accomplished was that his caramel company in Lancaster did over a million dollars worth of business. The fourth accomplishment is that Milton made a lot of people around the world happy with his delicious candy. The last accomplishment that Milton had was that he created a whole new town, and built it with all of his leftover money from his candy making business. One thing that Milton did for the community, was that he created the best candies ever made for people all over to enjoy. Another thing that Milton did for the community was that he cared more about others than himself. For example, he cared more about the kids health at the orphanage than his health when they were all sick. Another thing that Milton did for the community was when Milton lived with his parents, he helped them by going to get things that they needed, or he would run errands for them. Milton also was kind to other people. For example, whenever or wherever Milton is he always says hello to everyone he sees because he wants them to be happy. The last thing that Milton did for the community was he built a town. Milton built a for people to live and/or visit. Milton created a school for children and teens to learn. Milton's candy factory was in the same town, so there were many job opportunities for adults and teens, because Milton had many openings at his factory. Milton also created an amusement park for everyone to enjoy. As you can see, Milton had many accomplishments/contributions, and he did many good things for the community.

Milton has had many obstacles/problems throughout his life. The first challenge Milton faced was when his sister Serena, his father Henry, his mother Fanny, his aunt Mattie and his wife Catherine all died. Of course they all didn't die at the same time, but Milton had to face a challenge when one of them died. When one died, the next year of month, another one died. Milton lost a lot of family members as he went on throughout his life. Every time someone died in his family, Milton grew sadder and sadder. Another challenge that Milton had to face was when he kept moving for job opportunities. Milton has moved from his home, Pennsylvania, to England, to Denver to New Orleans to New York City, and all the way back home. Another challenge that Milton faced was that he started off wanting to make candy, nuts, and caramels, at the same time. That meant that Milton had to get more equipment. In order to get more equipment, Milton needed more money. For some reason Milton always needed money. The next challenge that Milton faced was that he had to keep asking the bank for money. Milton asked for about three or four loans from the bank. He was so convincing that the bank kept giving him the money he needed. But of course, Milton lost more money. The last obstacle that Milton faced was that he and his business had to go through the Great Depression. Milton did not want to give up his dream. He told the workers not to quit, or to get tired. He wanted the business to keep going. And it did. Milton and his business managed to go through the Great Depression without losing jobs or money. As you can see, Milton has had many obstacles/problems throughout his life. Milton has had many honors and awards. One honor that Milton has is that (sadly after he died) in the great rotunda of Founders Hall at Milton Hershey School stands a bronze statue of Milton with his arm around one of the orphan boys that he helped. People think of Milton as a leader. Another reward that Milton got was that after all of his hard work of shipping and making candies for England, Milton received a check from England worth 2,500 dollars! Milton was as happy as a person who never stopped smiling! The people of Hershey Town came up with a saying, so they could remember Milton Hershey. The saying was "His deeds are his monument. His life is our inspiration". As you can see, Milton has had many honors and awards.

Milton has many characteristics/character traits. One character trait that Milton has, is that he is very determined. Milton has had many problems along the way. But, Milton kept going. He did not want to give up on his dream. The last thing that Milton wanted was to quit, and give up on everything. Milton's goal, or dream was to make delicious candy for people all over the world. That it exactly what Milton did. Milton was determined, so that's why he met his goal. The second character trait that Milton has, is that he is devoted. Milton was devoted to candy making. Making candy was the on,y thing that Milton wanted to do. Milton wanted to make candy so bad, he said he would work all day and everyday in order to make candy. Because Milton was devoted to making candy, Milton made candy. The third and final character trait that Milton has is that he is always patient. Milton was very patient when his money didn't come in. Milton made and sold some of his candy to England. In England, the candy shops there, would sell Milton's candy. Once people in England bought the candy, the money would be shipped back to Milton. The money from England didn't come back on time to Milton. Milton had many payments due from England, and each time, the money was late. But every time Milton didn't through a fit, or call England asking for money. He would stay calm, and wait. That was because Milton was patient. As you can see, Milton has many characteristics/character traits.

You or any other person would learn a lot about how Milton Hershey lived. For example, one way that you would learn a lot is that Milton never gave up on his dream. Milton kept working no matter what. Milton worked through times where his family members died. Milton worked through the Great Depression. The second thing that you or any other young person would learn about Milton was that he loved his work. He liked his job not because he was working with food. Milton only loved his work because he was making delicious candy for everyone to enjoy, and that it was making them happy. The third thing that you or any other young person would learn about Milton is that he tried to help as many people as he could. He managed to do that by creating an orphanage for orphans who don't have homes. Milton also wanted to help adults and teens who needed jobs, so he built a town with a lot of job opportunities. For example candy making. The fourth thing that you or any other young person would learn about Milton is that he always tried his best. No matter what challenge or problem Milton faced, he still worked hard. The fifth and last thing that you or any other young person would learn about Milton is that people said and still say that "Milton's life is our inspiration". As you can see, you or any other young person would learn a lot about how Milton Hershey lived. " If I ever become rich, I am going to use all my money to build schools to give ever boy and girl an opportunity to get an education."-Milton Hershey " Caramels are only a fad, chocolate is a permanent thing." -Milton Hershey
