Many people forget about the true qualities that make a hero. Is it helping charity? Putting out a fire? Or is it the few people in this society that put others before themselves? This is a fighter; risking his life everyday in uncommon territory, harsh climates and packing 50 pounds of gear. The only thing on his mind is the mission. Helping his brothers flee, or generate an attack. Petty Officer Michael Monsoor was a Seal in the United States Navy, fighting for freedom with a great heart between his shoulders. Michael Monsoor is a true hero because he fights for our country, puts others before himself and made the ultimate sacrifice for his fellow comrades.

On April 5, 1981, Michael Monsoor was born a selfless and dedicated human being. Throughout his young life Michael battled asthma by playing in sports and other recreational activities. He was a bright kid, and knew right from wrong. It wasn’t a surprise when he became a Seal in 2004. Later, stationed in Ramadi in 2006, He made a sacrifice for our country and died from a grenade.

To fight in our armed forces take a strong mental attitude, strength and courage. In the article “Remarks on presenting…” the author says “he began for the ultimate test of physical endurance: Seal training…” (“Remarks…”). This shows that he volunteered to complete in the hardest military challenge and exceeded it. He also had a disadvantage to the training, “He suffered from terrible asthma as a child…his coughing fits would land him in the hospital,” (“Remarks…”). This is significant because he was not only battling for our country but he was also battling a sickness. Overall, becoming a navy Seal and fighting asthma under harsh circumstances is heroic.

Michael Monsoor is an admirable hero because he put his life at risk to save others. During a mission Monsoor was with two other seals when a grenade was thrown in between the. In an article by Sarah Abruzzese she quotes, “In that terrible moment he had two options—to save himself or save his friends…” (Abruzzese). He then jumped on the grenade to save their lives thus, taking his in their place. Monsoor did something in that moment that most people would never do. In the Navy’s summary of action it states: “Petty Officer Monsoor’s actions could not have been more selfless or clearly intentional…” (Summary of Action). His Actions were no doubt heroic and will be remembered forever in those two Seal’s live. Michael Monsoor’s selflessness and bravery makes him an overall hero.

Monsoor is not only a hero for his military sacrifice but for the inspiration he gave to others from what he achieved from his actions. In the action “Remarks on Presenting…” it says, “The Medal of Honor is America’s highest decoration of military valor, Over the years, many who have received the medal have given their lives in the action that earned it. The name Petty Officer Michael Monsoor is now among them,” (“Remarks…”). The award is only given to people who gave a most honorable display of heroic actions. Michael was one of the first people in the War on Terror to receive this honor. Also said in an article by Sarah Abruzzese she states, “President Bush on Tuesday awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously to a member of the Navy Seals who threw himself onto a grenade in 2006 to save his comrades,” (Abruzzese). This shows that not only was he awarded the Medal of Honor but he was awarded it by the president. It is obvious that anyone who fights for out country, takes his life for other people and is recognized by the President, is a hero of anyone in the United States of America
