Marilyn Monroe

by Paige from Grand Rapids

I'm trying to find myself as a person, sometimes that's not easy to do. Millions of people live their entire lives without finding themselves. But it is something I must do.

On June 1, 1926, Marilyn Monroe was born at California’s Los Angeles General Hospital. Her given name was Norma Jeane Mortensen, but when she became famous, movie directors changed her name to make it sound better. Norma had two other siblings but never saw them. Her mom, Gladys Monroe Baker Mortensen, never introduced Norma to her biological father and had to give Norma away two weeks later to an orphanage because she was unable to take care of her. Norma’s mom divorced her biological father and married another man, then divorced again. Norma had to live with many foster families many of which were mean to her.

In 1934, Norma’s mother was hospitalized due to mental illness. When she was in high school, she lived with her aunt. Next door lived Jim Dougherty who was older than Norma. She fell in love with him and dropped out of high school to marry him in 1942. Jim went into the Army and was away a lot. Norma helped out during the war since a lot of the men were gone. In 1944, a photographer from the U.S Army saw Norma and took pictures of her. One year later, Norma signed up with the Blue Book Model Agency. She was very lonely because Jim was never in the U.S, so she decided to divorce him. One year later, she signed up with the agency. Norma got a job with Twentieth Century Fox, and changed her name to Marilyn Monroe. In 1957, while she was in a movie, she had a miscarriage so she took a break from acting for a while. Six years later Marilyn sang for Kennedy’s birthday gala, which made her even more famous. On August 5, at the age of 36, Marilyn died at her home in California.

Marilyn had a lot of hardships and struggles in her short life. She never got to see her two other siblings or her real father. Two weeks after she was born, Marilyn lived in many foster families and orphanages, which treated her badly. Plus, one common thing kids might go through is Marilyn’s parents got divorced. She never knew who was her real father, but she was always curious.

Marilyn was in eleven movies, and received a lot of Golden Globe Awards for them. She also performed a few songs for the U.S troops who were stationed in Korea at the time. Before Marilyn died she performed at the Kennedy’s birthday gala, which made her a lot more famous.

I admire Marilyn Monroe because she was caring enough to help out with World War II. She was very brave and courageous and overcame many of her hardships and struggles in her childhood years, which I admire a lot. Marilyn had some traits such as bravery, caring, persistence, and she was very committed. Marilyn Monroe died on August 5, 1962, in her California home. No one still knows how she died, but people made many myths how she did die. A lot of people say she committed suicide. Other people say she did an overdose of drugs. A lesson I learned from Marilyn or Norma is don’t let anything keep your dreams from being torn down or give up on anything.
