What is a hero? A hero is defined in the dictionary as someone who has distinguished courage or ability; someone who is admired for their brave deeds and noble qualities. My hero is all of these traits and beyond. Michelle Obama was born in the slums of Chicago, Illinois on January 17, 1964. As first lady, she is a very important African American to our society. She grew up with her mom, dad, and older brother, Craig. Her mother was a secretary and her father was a city pump operator. Michelle grew up in a one-bedroom apartment and slept in the living room with her brother. Michelle was very smart for her age. She was so smart that she learned to read at the age of 4 and skipped second grade, as her brother did, too.

By 1981, Michelle graduated as salutatorian of her class at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. After high school, she went to Princeton University as her brother did a year sooner. Michelle felt discriminated against when she applied for Harvard Law School because the college counselors tried to talk her out of going to the school because they said her grades weren't meeting standards when they truly were. She made the decision to go to the college and she succeeded. In 1985 she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and went on in 1988 to earn a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School.

Michelle Obama is my hero because she is so involved in our country. She was the executive director of the Pacific Office of Public Allies, which is a non- profit leadership program that helps adults with their careers. She also joined the University of Chicago as Associate Dean of Students, helps the Community Service program, worked for University of Chicago Hospitals, and is vice president of Community Service and External Affairs. She manages the Business Diversity Program, sits on 6 boards, and holds honorable titles like one of the "25 of the World’s Most Inspiring Women," and has also gotten best dressed twice and made the "Best Dressed" list in Essence and Vanity Fair magazine. She was also number 58 in the "Most Influential Alumni of the Year."

Michelle Obama is my hero because she is making the most out of her life. She is also my hero because she works hard for the things she wants. She is also a very good role model for kids because she is so involved and isn't lazy. She inspires and motivates me because she shows me with her actions that any goals that you set in life are possible if you want them badly enough. Michelle is also my hero because she conducts herself well and is very knowledgeable. She is also my hero because we have a lot of the same views on things. She stresses education in public schools and I think education is one of the most important things, too. She is also currently working on a foundation to fight childhood obesity which is extremely important because children need to be physically active and choose healthy food to eat.

Michelle Obama is a very important African American to our society. She is my hero because she is smart, inspirational, and active in our country, willing to help, stylish, and she seems like she is happy all of the time. That is inspirational to me because I want to be happy. Michelle Obama is a very important member of our society. She is everything that a hero should be and that's why she is my hero and a hero to so many more Americans around the United States. Michelle Obama is a great example of growing up and having hardly anything to being the first African American First Lady of the United States and it shows that even if you don't have much to begin with, your life can still be a great success.
