Mike Skinner of The Streets |
Mike Skinner (a.k.a. The Streets) was born in 1978 in Birmingham, England and since an early age showed an interest and talent in music. He got his first keyboard at the age of 5, and even constructed a miniature-recording studio in his bedroom as a teen, where he recorded his first album. After writing hip-hop and garage music his whole life, he finally created his breakthrough hit “Has it come to this,” which reached the top 20 in England. His new album: “Original Pirate Material,” proved a new step in garage and hip-hop music, attracting indie, garage, and hip-hop fans to its unique style and winning numerous “Album of the Year” awards.
Two years later, he released his concept album “A Grand Don’t Come for Free” which spawned many more singles, including “Fit but You Know It,” his highest selling single so far. But with Skinner’s newfound fame came many issues. He became addicted to alcohol and cocaine, and was often appearing at concerts drunk. He even stole a microphone when he was on a radio show that he then used to record his third album.
Skinner’s latest album deals with the issues of being famous and of his frequently featured drug addiction. Since its release, he has gone on numerous successful tours and enrolled in a rehabilitation program, only to relapse shortly after leaving.
Lately, Skinner has been involved in his record label, “The Beats,” which is focused on bringing attention to up-and-coming stars like the Mitchell Brothers and Lady Sovereign. He has also recently released the longest music video ever made, replacing MJ’s “Thriller.” He remains one of the forerunners of garage music and has influenced dozens of bands, including the now-famous Arctic Monkeys.
Mike Skinner is my hero because he has great determination and possesses a profound sense of creativity. He tried to get his demo released through many obstacles at the time, and managed to record his hugely-successful album with no outside help. He has pioneered the garage music scene and continues to lead the way in modern music today.
