Mia Hamm

by Amber from Largo

"It's more difficult to stay on top than to get there."

My hero is Mia Hamm. Her full name is Mariel Margaret Hamm. Mia once said, "It is more difficult to stay on top than to get there." She is known as the best female soccer player in the world. She went to the FIFA World Cup when she was 19. Mia never gave up and always pushed herself to get to the top.

Mia was born on march 17, 1972 and is still alive right now. She has twin girls and is married to Nomar Garciaparra. Nomar was a famous baseball player. Mia was born in Selma, Alabama but moved to Wichita falls, Texas when she was only 9 years old.

Hamm moved to northern Virginia to finish her high school career. She was the youngest player ever to play for the National team at age 15! Se attended the university of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was nicknamed Jordan by her teammates. They got the nickname Jordan from the UNC athlete, Michael Jordan.

Mia Hamm is my hero because when I grow up I want to be just like her. I'm working myself to get there but I have a couple of years. It's amazing how much she accomplished in her career. She is a great role model for me and inspired me to start soccer and bring my team up to get to the top.
