Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla

by Erika from Flushing

Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla is a hero from my country, Mexico. A hero is a person that you admire for the things he/she does. A hero has many characteristics, such as being: smart, helpful, a good leader, strong, noble, honest, and many others. I admire Miguel Hidalgo because he fought for Mexican independence. He was an instigator of Mexican independence and also a priest. He never thought of himself; he always thought of his country, Mexico. These are good reasons why Miguel Hidalgo is a hero.

To begin with, Miguel Hidalgo Y Costilla was born on the ranch of San Vicente, in the district of Guanajuato, on May 8, 1753, and was executed at Chihuahua, on July 30, 1811. Hidalgo studied in the city of Valladolid, the present Morelia, and was ordained as a priest in 1778. He was called the Father of Mexican Independence. The members of his family were his father Cristobal Hidalgo, his mother Maria Gallaga, and his two illegitimate daughters. He fought for a free Mexico. Hidalgo was warned by Dona Josefa Ortiz that his committee would betray him, and so, without further delay, he openly declared Mexican independence on September 16, 1810.

As a priest, he rang his parish bells at midnight on September 16, 1810, in the city of Dolores Guanajuato. Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla had the church bells rung to call the townspeople to the church, where he told his followers that the time had come to expel the Spaniards who had been governing Mexico for a long time. His speech, known as the “Grito de Dolores,” (“Cry of Dolores,”) set off the Mexican War of Independence, which resulted in Mexico becoming an independent country. He achieved his purpose, which was to make a free Mexico. Now, every 16th of September, the cry of the independence is repeated.

Miguel Hidalgo is a hero, and is important to me, because I am from Mexico, and he made my country free. In addition, he was a priest that never thought of himself. He always thought of his people, his country. My country will always remember him as a hero. Also, in my country, teachers try to pass this information onto the new generations, because we need to keep alive the information about why we are free.

In conclusion, I just want to give you my point of view of why we, Mexican people, consider Miguel Hidalgo to be a hero. He was a priest that fought for his country. He died for us, because he wanted a free Mexico. He spent part of his life fighting for Mexico.
