Rodney Mullen

by TravisM from Fernandina Beach

My hero is considered the godfather of skateboarding. His name is Rodney Mullen and he practically invented the streetskating style. Although Rodney's father was against his thirst for skateboarding, he reluctantly said yes to support his son's habit, despite the injuries he might attain and the belief that it would amount to nothing.

Rodney had only skated for 9 months and already had his first sponsor, compared to the 9 years it usually takes most of the greatest skaters. He was constantly winning contests and in his first three years of skateboarding he invented 3 tricks that are now commonly used. By the time he was 13 he won in a major contest against some of the top pros in the world and was declared to be a pro himself.

The 80s were considered Mullen's decade. He won the World's Freestyle Championship 35 times over and only placed second once.Throughout that time he invented over 30 tricks which are found to be quite difficult to other pro skaters to this day.

Today, Rodney is 34 and still outperforms most pros. Not only is he an achieved skateboarder, he is also a successful businessman owning three companies, though that will hardly touch his skating profile. He is seen in magazines doing tricks like handstands and flipping the board in ways most thought was impossible. Rodney will probably stay in the skating gig considering the fact that he is constantly adapting to new styles.

In conclusion, Rodney Mullen has been an instrument of evolution in skateboarding. He accomplished his dream of being a very dominant and talented skateboarder quite early in his career and will most likely continue to do so. He has established a winning legacy that will probably never be broken and through all this he is very humble about his achievements and is very supportive of any skater.
