Emily has been respected for her great change that she made to Canada. Emily was born in 1868, in the town of Cookstown, Ontario. When she was old enough to have a house of her own, she moved to Alberta in 1903. Emily had to teach herself a lot of things through her lifetime because her family wasn't always there for her. Emily began her career as a writer. She wrote about humorous things but she also had concern in her writing for women and children's rights. Emily wanted to fight for women and children's rights.

1916 was a remarkable year for her because a group of women wanted to help her fight for women's rights. Even though the group of women that wanted to help her was not the group that Emily picked to help her ,she was still happy because she knew that some people would agree with her on wanting women and men to have equal rights. Because Emily taught herself a lot of things she wasn't afraid to try and stand up for what she believed in. Emily would never give up the work that she worked hard in if nobody cared about it. When Emily showed the Supreme Court why the rights of women should be changed, they disagreed but Emily did not stop there. To me a hero is someone who has done something that other people admire. A celebrity is not a hero because it is someone who is just in the spotlight. Emily succeeded in getting women the freedom they deserve, but she died in 1933 so she could not enter in an election.

Because of what Emily did, she and her four other companions Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Henrietta Edwards, and Irene Parlby got recogized for being able to change women and children's rights. They did not win a special award at that time but they sure did deserve one. If I had the authority to give them an award I sure would. They probably did not win an award because women were not "persons" on October 18, 1929, and Emily died on October 27, 1933. That was not enough time for them to give her aa award. Other women were happy and proud of what Emily did because they had the chance to take advantage and vote in the election. Emily was also very proud of what she did for women and children and I think that is the best reward to have.

I chose Emily as my hero for quite a few reasons. Emily was very confident in herself and would always have the strength to go further and push herself. If she did not have to let four other women join her fight against the law, she could have done it by herself. Emily did what was right for women and they should have had the freedom they have now a long time before Emily did that. She was able to succeed on having the change so that they could be declared "persons". Because of her, women can vote in a federal election. If Emily would not have done what she did, women would not have the chance to vote for who they wanted to. That's why Emily Murphy is my hero!!!
