by Joel from Suwanee

In 1969, while Neil Armstrong was on the moon, he said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Neil  Armstrong was an astronaut and the first man on the moon.  Neil Armstrong is a heroic icon because he was the first man to step on the moon.

During his childhood, his role models were the Wright Brothers. Due to admiration of the Wright Brothers, Armstrong received his pilot's license at the age of sixteen. Exceeding his pilot skills, he served in the Korean War as an excellent Navy pilot. He also tested  many aircrafts such as the X-15 Hypersonic and the North American F-82 Twin Mustang. With this knowledge, Neil Armstrong was able to prosper his future as an astronaut.

Neil Armstrong is a hero to many because of his fortitude and selflessness. In 1957, the Space Race between the U.S. and Russia started, and Armstrong wanted to help with this competition. The article states that Armstrong was going to the moon which was a new frontier that no one has ever gone to, but he was brave enough to go (Han 2012). This proves that Armstrong had fortitude by taking a risk of going to an unexplored place. Another article states that, Armstrong served in the Korean War as a Navy pilot and flew 78 combat missions during the war (Biography.com Editors). This illustrates that Neil Armstrong was selfless by risking his life for others to be safe. In conclusion, Neil Armstrong is a well-known heroic icon to many because of his sacrifice and bravery.
