"One small step for man, One giant leap for mankind." With these words and as the first man on the moon, Neil Alden Armstrong became a hero and inspired millions of people around the world. Neil Armstrong was born August 5, 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio, a small town in northwestern Ohio. He was the oldest of three children, and was a hardworking and successful man. As a small boy, he became irresistibly interested and fascinated with flying after a plane ride he took with his dad. (Gale) Neil studied aeronautical engineering at Purdue University before entering the naval flight school. He served in the Korean War and then joined NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in 1955 which started his work in space research. Neil Armstrong is a hero because he was the first man to walk on the moon and inspired many people with his dedication, bravery and success throughout his life.
Throughout his life, Neil Armstrong showed dedication, courage and bravery, and worked hard to achieve his goals. One of the ways he showed this is his dedication to flying. When Armstrong was only 14, he worked at a pharmacy to earn money to fly airplanes at a nearby airfield. He earned his pilot's license on his sixteenth birthday, and received it before he even got his automobile driver's license. (Gale). In addition, in order to go to college, he earned a Navy college scholarship, as his family did not have the means to send him to college. Another way he showed his dedication and bravery is his success as a naval flight pilot in the Korean conflict. He flew 78 combat missions and was awarded the Air Medal for the United States Military three times. (Gale). This demonstrates his courage to risk his life and serve his country, and his willingness to work hard for success. These examples show that Neil Armstrong is a person that people can respect and look up to for his hard work, dedication to follow his dreams and his courage.
Neil Armstrong was the first man to both land a lunar module on the moon and walk on the moon. Armstrong was one of three men who flew in Apollo 11 and landed on the moon for the first time in history on July 20, 1969. His famous quotes include saying "The Eagle has landed" and "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." (Dunbar). This is a significant accomplishment for him and the United States, as it achieved the huge goal set by President Kennedy to land on the moon. It also sets Armstrong's place in history as the first man to walk on the moon. In addition, being the first man on the moon, Armstrong and Apollo 11 made possible some of the most important science done in outer space and vastly expanded scientists understanding of the moon. (Van Riper) This shows how important it is to science and history that man could go to the moon. Neil Armstrong's commitment to space exploration and his inspiring quotes and words all contributed to the mission and its success, as well as made it so memorable. As the first man on the moon, Armstrong plays a significant role in space history.
After landing on the moon, Armstrong continued to do significant things, inspire others and be recognized for his work and courage. Armstrong was appointed Deputy Associate Administrator for Aeronautics and was responsible for coordination and management of overall NASA research and technology work in aeronautics. (Dunbar) This demonstrates the dedication of Armstrong to space research and the level of respect he had earned from his time as an astronaut. Neil Armstrong also received many recognitions, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and honorary doctorates from many universities, to name just a few. (Dunbar). This shows the respect and recognition he received from so many due to his dedication and contributions. He was a humble man, but inspired others through speeches and his actions, and was acknowledged for his courage and significant actions.
Neil Armstrong was an inspiration to his generation and beyond due to his contributions to space exploration and his personal characteristics of dedication and courage. By achieving the significant milestone of being the first man to land and walk on the moon, he became a hero and inspired many people's desires to become astronauts. His actions and accomplishments throughout his life serve as an example of hard work, bravery and commitment to achieving a goal.
