Nelly Furtado

by Erika from Bradford, Ontario

A famous quote from Furtado is "I say it's a girl's world". My hero is Nelly Furtado. I choose Furtado because when I went to We Day in Toronto Furtado was there and she made a very inspiring speech. Furtado showed me that you can do anything if you try.

Nelly Furtado was born on December 2nd 1978 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Furtado went to Richmond Elementary school. Some of Furtado's family members are Maria Manuela (mother), Antonio Jose (father), Jasper Gahunia (ex-boyfriend), Demacio Castellon (husband) and Nevis (daughter). Furtado started singing at the age of four and she started writing songs at the age of twelve. Also, Furtado started playing the trombone and the ukulele at the age of nine. The girls at the Childrens Kisaurni Girls Secondary school in Kenya inspired Nelly Furtado. The girls changed Furtado's life because when she came back to Canada, Furtado donated 1 million dollars to Free The Children. Furtado's family was originally very poor. When Furtado went to school she got made fun of because of her family being very poor or that her parents were immigrants. Furtado overcame those obstacles by not letting anyone bring her down. Also, by working with her mom so that she could get her mom more money.

I think when Nelly Furtado went to Kenya all by herself that considers her a hero. Also, Furtado helps fundraise for many charities. Some of the charities are Jumpstart and Warchild. Furtado helped Jumpstart by making a public service announcement to promote Jumpstart Read For The Record Campaign. Furtado also realized how important it was to read, so she read to some children. Furtado, with the help of many other celebrities, raised awareness and needed funds for the charity, Warchild.

Nelly Furtado`s character traits are ......

Talented - a gift Furtado was born with a gift and she started to show it at an early age of four.
Integrity - act honorably in all that you do. Although Furtaodo came from a poor background then became rich and famous she didn't forget about her family. Furtado showed this by going to Kenya.
Empathy - appreciate others and their feelings. Furtado went to Kenya and helped the less fortunate because she was once in the position.
Determined - to have a goal and to succeed in it. Furtado was determined to succeed with a poor upbringing.
Self-motivated - doing things independently. Furtado was self-motivated from a young age and doing things independently.

Furtado is always being positive and helping others. Furtado donates her time to go help people who are less fortunate and people who are in way worse circumstances than she is. That is what inspires me to be more like Furtado. I would really like to go and help people just like Furtado does.

In conclusion, my hero is Nelly Furtado because she has a heart made of gold and she wants to make a difference in the world. Also, Furtado persuaded me to be a better person.
