Nelson Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Mandela

by Markeith from Roxboro

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." These were the words spoken by Nelson Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Mandela. Nelson Mandela is my hero because he overcame the challenges and obstacles that were placed in front of him.

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in Transkei, South Africa. His father, Henry Mandela was the chief of the Tembu tribe. Nelson was qualified in law in 1942, after being educated at the University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand. In 1944, he joined the African National Congress. He and the ANC resisted against the ruling National Party's apartheid laws after 1948.

Nelson Mandela is a person that inspires people who believe in justice. I am proud to say that I am one of those people. When the white government of South Africa enforced apartheid laws that treated blacks like slaves, Mandela, along with other members of the African National Congress, tried their best to put a stop to their nonsense. They even risked a lifetime of imprisonment. Unfortunately, Mandela was thrown in jail for a lifetime.

Don't think that being thrown in jail could ever stop Mandela from fighting for what he believes in! After he was put in jail, members of the African National Congress held protests and rallies demanding the freedom of Nelson Mandela. As time went on, people all over the world began to recognize how horribly Mandela had been treated. Knowing that they could not fight off the entire world, the government decided to release Mandela on February 11, 1990. Soon after, he became the president of South Africa.

Now do you understand why Nelson Mandela is my hero? He holds all of the characteristics that a hero should. Such characteristics include leadership, compassion, courage, and bravery. Maybe when I get older, I can be like my hero.
