Nelson Mandela was a hero because he cared about equality and because he sacrificed himself for the greater good. Nelson's parents had died when he wasn't all that old. Shortly thereafter he passed high school and started college where he proved to be trouble. This was due to disagreements with management and he decided to leave the college. Afterwards he stole two cows for money to travel for jobs and opportunity. He was later given a whole team of attorneys and a business.

Nelson Mandela was a hero because he cared about equality. Nelson heavily involved himself in many organizations such as the ANC (African National Congress). He created an organization called the ANCYL (African National Congress Youth League). These organizations peacefully protested any issues that they had with the government. Nelson Mandela was considered one of the three black leaders of all of the organizations for his strength, bravery, and desire for equality in the country. Mandela wanted equality so badly that he had a tendency to get in trouble with the government.

Nelson Mandela was a hero because he sacrificed himself for the greater good of all of the citizens. Nelson was sent to prison many times for what he did. "On June 12, 1964, eight of the accused, including Mandela, were sentenced to life imprisonment. From 1964 to 1982, he was incarcerated at Robben Island Prison, off Cape Town; thereafter, he was at Pollsmoor Prison, nearby on the mainland" (Nelson Mandela Biographical). To this he said; " 'I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal I hope to live for and achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die' " (Biography of Nelson). All that Mandela wanted was equality for everyone no matter what they look like. He didn't care one bit what happened to him as long as that goal was achieved. He was a selfless and loving man and hero no matter what trouble he got in.

A hero is someone who is brave, selfless, caring, loving, does what they do to be a good person, stands up for what's right, and willing to sacrifice themselves for others needs. Nelson Mandela fits this description because he did what he did for the greater good, not self achievement. For the actions he made, he had to be strong and brave. The reason he spent his whole life fighting for equality was because he cared about other people and he wanted the best for them.
