My hero is famous Russian poet Nikolai A. Nekrasov. He was born in 1821. His father was a landlord and the family lived in their estate not far from Yaroslavl, Russia. Nikolai made friends with peasants’ children. His sister said that her brother often went to the forest and river, played with the village boys.

His father was a cruel man. He didn’t like it and every time he learnt that Nikolai played with the village children, he beat him unmercifully. But Nikolai remained faithful to his friends. His father’s cruelty and tyranny didn’t make him a bad man. When he grew up he became a poet and in his poems he wrote about the life of peasants and their children.

From these poems the rich learned that peasants’ children started their working life at an early age, how they starved and died, how joyless and hard their life was.

The high society was shocked. It was not acceptable to write about such things. But Nikolai Nekrasov made them look into the eyes of the truth.

I think Nikolai Nekrasov was courageous. He was one of the people who changed the society for the better. He wasn’t afraid of what other people said and did the right thing. That is why I consider him my hero.
