Nina Simone's music empowered many Americans to fight for Civil Rights for African Americans. Simone advocated for African American Civil Rights in her songs about equality for African Americans. Nina Simone wrote "Mississippi Goddam" in response to the 1963 assassination of Medgar Evers and the Birmingham church bombing that killed 4 young African American girls (Biography.com). Nina Simone wrote songs to try explain what tragedy that has affected her world. Simone wrote songs to bring attention to racism. Nina Simone wasn't well known to the music community.
Nina Simone would've been more famous if she didn't write songs about the Civil Rights Movement. Simone put other people's rights in front of her own music career. Had it not been for Simone's outspokenness, her principles, she might have gained the fame of an Aretha Franklin or Diana Ross (Basu). Simone gave up her spot in the Hall of Fame so she could fight for equality. If she wasn't so loud about her feelings for the Civil Rights Movement she may have been better known. Nina Simone dealt with racism her whole life.
Nina Simone moved to France because of racism. The country that made her famous rejected her as a person. To other people appearances were never just skin deep (Dargis). Simone was so tired of being judged that she moved away from the place where she was born. The country that she was born in rejected as a person and made her feel unworthy. Those people who judged Simone only saw the color of her skin not her potential. Nina was a fighter: she fought for her music career and she fought for other people's rights.
Simone's music was empowering and helped people get in mood to fight for their rights. Simone gave up the musician's life to fight for Civil Rights. Simone moved to France because she could no longer deal with racism every day. Nina Simone was inspirational, brave, bold, and was an underdog that was never remembered. She was an underdog because she fought for what's right even if it meant she would never be remember as a legendary musician. Simone saved so many people with her music, made awareness for racism, and should be remember as a hero because she helped so many people with her music which is the best way to be saved.
