Nancy Greene

by Daniel from Calgary, Alberta, Canada

"I think what it takes to succeed remains the same." - Nancy Greene

Nancy Greene was born on May 11 1943 in Ottawa. Nancy had two sisters and three brothers. Her parents had taught them all how to ski by the age of three years old. The Red Mountain Ski Club was founded by Nancy’s parents as they were very keen skiers. Ski racing was something Nancy really enjoyed and she began racing in local high school races. In 1958 Nancy won her first trophy. She came in second at the Canadian Junior Championships, her sister Elizabeth came first.

Nancy Married Al Raine and together they made skiing their life. Nancy Greene was nicknamed “Alpaca” because of her relaxed way of skiing, a style that won her SIX Canadian competitions and THREE United States competitions. In 1967 Nancy Greene broke the European's domination of skiing becoming the first to win the world cup.

Nancy Greene skied for many teams. The first was the Canadian National ski team. She skied for that team for 9 years and then she moved onto the World Champion teams. Nancy skied on that team for four years. Although she skied for a lot more teams, I am not going to tell you all of them. Now I am going to tell you about the honours and awards she got. In 1968 she was honoured with the title, “Officer of the Order of Canada”. Also in 1968 she won the “Athlete of the Year” medal. Earlier on, she won the “British Columbia Ambassador of Tourism" award.

I have enjoyed researching Nancy Greene. She was a world class Olympic female skier who won many medals. She was involved in many ski teams. Today she is an inspiration to young people to follow their dreams. She is now possibly going to enter into a new area becoming a senator in the government.
