Ginny Owens

My hero is Ginny Owens. She is a contemporary Christian singer and also plays the piano. Ginny is thirty years old. Did I forget to mention that she is blind?

Ginny Owens was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. She was the older of two children. Ginny lost her sight due to a congenital eye disease when she was two. She started playing the piano the same year. She wrote her first song when she was 8.

After Ginny grew up and graduated Belmont University with a degree in Music Education, she went looking for a music position in the school program. Unfortunately, she found most schools apprehensive. They didn’t want to hire a blind music teacher.

Around that same time, Owens recorded her first demo tape. Soon after that, she signed with Rocketown Records in 1998. Her first album, Without Condition, followed in mid-1999. Her second album was Something More. Her newest albums are Beautiful and Live from New Orleans.

Ginny Owens is my hero because she accomplished so much even though she can’t see. I think that this is extremely awesome. I like music very much, but I don’t know if I would be willing to play if I had a handicap like hers. I look up to Ginny because she had dreams, and she didn’t let anything slow her down. Now she is singing, doing what she loves, and is my hero for never giving up. She proved how she could still do what she wanted to--even without sight. If I ever had something like that happen to me, I hope I would be able to achieve my dreams, too.
