Paul Hamm

by Vishnu H. From Sycamore Junior High

I'm sure these Olympics will feel a lot different. There is not only more pressure on us as a team but more pressure individually.

My hero is Paul Hamm he is a gymnast. He is the member of the United States Olympic Gymnastics team and a part of the winning 2004 United States team, at Athens. He is a sports hero because, the event that he does is a sports.

Paul Hamm is a man with strength and courage was the first, as a child he used to swing in his friendly neighborhood. He was born on Sept. 24, 1982 in Waukesha, Wis. His hobbies were playing tennis and gymnastics .He played for Team Chevron – Ohio State. He began gymnastics in 1989. He was always the best among everyone he was around. Paul was on the Junior National Team for 4 years (1995 – 1999). He was on the Men’s Senior National Team for 51/2 years (1999 – 2004) present day.

He finished seventh in the World Championships all-around, the best men’s all-around finish for the United States. He is the son of Sandy and Cecily, and has a twin brother, Morgan, who was also on the 2000 Olympic Team and is a member of The U.S. Senior National Team. The brothers made history as they became the first twins ever to compete in the same Olympic Games gymnastics competition. Older sister Betsy (23) recently finished her collegiate gymnastics career at Iowa State University. Their father was an All-American diver. Paul is currently taking classes at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and is interested in pursuing a career in physical therapy. He was the one that the people thought would win the first gold medal in the men's all-around gymnastics, as they have never won a medal for that event before.

Finally Paul Hamm won the gold medal for the men’s all-around gymnastics final, after all the hard work and effort he has come through. Paul made history by winning the United States first ever men’s world all-around title in 2003. He also got a gold in floor exercise, and team all-around silver, helping the United States in winning its highest medal total that is 7 and also most gold medals since 1979. For his efforts Paul, was nominated for the AAU Sullivan Award and the USOC Sports Man of the year award.

The reason why Paul Hamm is my hero is because he is someone that I would like to be like in my life. To me, he is a man of great skill and prestige. Not only for the fact that he does gymnastics, which is a great sport, but mainly because he is successful in what he. I think people, even if they do not do gymnastics, should respect him for who he is. He was probably as common a man as anyone else. He was a common man whom strove for perfection.
