Paul David “Bono” Hewson has been the lead singer for over twenty years of arguably the biggest band of our generation, while at the same time promoting global awareness and change for causes such as AIDS and poverty in Africa.

Bono lives in Dublin, Ireland and this is where his career with U2 started. U2 released their first studio album in 1980, and since then Bono has taken on many different initiatives. Bono’s most notable initiatives are being the spokesman for the Jubilee 2000 project to end Third World debt, co-founding the organization DATA (Debt, Aid, Trade, Africa), the ONE campaign to end poverty, and most recently he co-founded the Product (RED) campaign which encourages large companies to sell specific lines of clothing to raise money to fight AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. Bono’s contributions to the world have had such an impact that he has been honored with many awards and has even been knighted in Britain. Bono is a hero because he contributed time and effort to fight for worthy causes when he could have just made music.

Bono has done a lot of charity work outside of U2, but he is also a hero because of what he does in U2. U2 has arguably been the biggest rock band for the past few years. Their music appeals to all audiences and their latest album; No Line on the Horizon has not changed this fact. A part of the reason they are so popular is not just their music, but also their performance. A U2 concert is one you will never forget because they always include out of the box things that are hard to believe, such as a 360 stage in their upcoming tour. U2 performs for the people, and they make sure people are entertained when they go to a U2 concert. One reason U2 is different from other groups is that they fight the trend of increasing ticket prices to a point where the average person cannot afford them. This tour, they made a point of keeping the tickets at low prices, so even the average person could attend the U2 experience.

Bono has made a difference in my life because he has made me think about the people of the world who are not as fortunate as me and need our help. Bono, along with The Edge (Guitar), Adam Clayton (Bass), and Larry Mullen Jr. (Percussion), have created my favorite music that will other and myself with continue to listen to for many years to come. Bono inspires change, and his goal is to create a better world for everyone. Bono does not contribute his time and effort to charities and music for the popularity and money, he does it because it is right, and that is why he is my hero.
