with a mission to play soccer."

I chose my hero not because he was famous, rich, or because he broke a record. I picked him as my hero because he had the courage to make the best out of what he had. He also gave others hope that they too, could succeed in what they work hard towards, and make a difference in the world.

Pelé was born on October 23, 1940 in Tres Coracos, Brazil to a very poor family. He learned to play soccer from his father, Dondinho, who was a center forward for a moderately good team until he fractured his leg. Pelé played not with a soccer ball like most kids, but with a bundle of socks stuffed with papers. If he was lucky he found a grapefruit to use instead. Despite these difficulties, Pelé was spotted by the Brazilian soccer legend Waldemar de Brito and invited to join his amature team, Clube Atlético Bauru. He was an instant success, and by the age of 15 was offered a position on a proffesional Brazilian soccer team.

At the age of 16, Pelé was the top scorer in the league, and a mere 10 months later was offered a professional position on the Brazilian national team. Only 1 year after that, he scored 2 goals in the finals of the World Cup vs. Sweden, securing Brazil’s victory. Pelé then went on to assist Brazil in 2 more World Cup wins, before he retired to club soccer in October 3, 1974.

Pelé wasn’t just a great soccer player; he had many other talents as well. He wrote many autobiographies, videos, and even composed music! He also showed many children throughout the world the joy of playing soccer and working through your difficulties to accomplish your goals. This is why I consider him my hero.
