On the second week of November my family got a call saying that my grandpa was sick at home. My mom went to his house, she is a nurse, she said that he had to go to the hospital because he is really, really sick. For the next two weeks my mom, my sister, and I went to visit him. He had his ups and downs. He had recovered a little bit, and then he started to get forgetful and didn’t remember some of our family. Then the next day we saw hope when I walked into the room, he knew who I was, and he noticed through all the sickness that I got a haircut. The next day was the last day that I visited him. I was scared. He was throwing up and I felt that I couldn’t do anything. A few days later I got home from school and it was the worst news I had EVER heard! During the last week of November my family had a tragic loss. It had a big impact on my family. My grandpa has always been my hero.
My grandpa was born in Daly City, but before he turned one year old he and his family moved to Cork, Ireland. There he attended school and played numerous sports, such as rugby, and many more. My grandpa loved Ireland, but he decided to come to California for better opportunities. In California he met my grandma. They fell in love and had six children. To support his family he worked at his very own bar. He had many regulars and made very good friends. By far, my grandpa's favorite activity was fishing. He would come home with some of the best salmon in the world. My grandpa loved his family.
When I was little I used to love going over to my grandparents' house. There were many reasons for this. I love family and we are really close, playing cards, and watching television. My family is really close, but I grew really close to my grandparents when my mom would go to work and leave me with them. My grandpa taught me to be the best Go Fish card game player in the world. Maybe not the world, but everyday after school for about two years my grandfather and I used to play cards. He actually told me that he thought I could play professionally. We also used to watch television when we got bored with playing cards. One of the big television shows was MASH, a show about the army. He also loved to hear about all of my sporting activities. He loved listening to what I said about basketball and soccer and even volleyball. Whether I won or lost he was always proud of me.
My house is near my grandparents' house, so as much as I could I went there. When I was a little bit younger I went to my grandparents' house almost every day. We would spend hours just talking and never get bored. He always knew what to say and even if he had told the story before it never got old. My grandpa was the kind of person who you could talk to for hours and hours and never not have a subject to talk about. I never wanted to leave.
My grandpa is my hero because he was a very caring, generous, and funny person. He was caring because no matter what he did he would always put others before himself. If you were feeling bad he always knew what to do to make you feel better. He was generous because he always gave away his things to people who didn't have as much as him. He is so loving and never gets mad at anyone. He is funny in a few ways. At family dinners he was the one to always crack the jokes. Sometimes people's food would fly out of their mouths. I love my grandpa and will always miss him. He will always be my hero!
