Roberta L. Bondar

by Zoe from Barrie

My hero is Roberta Lynn Bondar. She was born December 4th 1945, in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. She is 64 yrs old. Most of you may not know who Roberta is! So I'll tell you ... she is the first Canadian woman in space and the first neurologist in space. She went to space on Jan.22.1992. For 8 days, 1 hour, 44 minutes and 33 seconds. She landed on Jan.30.1992.

In 1983 she was chosen along with 5 other Canadian astronauts to train at NASA. In 1992 she went to space aboard the "Space Shuttle Discovery." That day she became the first Canadian woman in space AND the world's first neurologist in space. When she went to space she was 47 yrs old. She trained at NASA for 9 yrs to go to space for only 8 days! I think she was Courageous, Determined and Brave for going out into the great unknown. Her crew was:
Ronald J. Grabe
Stephen S. Oswald
David C. Hilmers
Norman E. Thagard
William F. Readdy
Ulf D. Merbold

Roberta Bondar has a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and Zoology from the University of Guelph, Masters Degree in Experimental Pathology at University of Toronto, Medical Degree at McMaster University, and Tufts New England Medical Centre in Boston specializing in Neuro-Ophthalmology.

Roberta Bondar is my hero because I believe just as much as she does that women can do anything that men can do. Some awards she have received over the years are:
-Science North
-Girl Guides of Canada
-Kirt Hahn Award
- Federation of Medical Women of Canada
and many more.
She has also written the book "Touching Earth".

Facts about Roberta Lynn Bondar:
- Sister named Barbara
- She has always been interested in Science
- School named after her in Ottawa

My hero influences me to do my best so I can have a successful education. "The Sky is no longer the limit!" -Unknown.
