When she started to go to school in November 14, at the age of six years old, Ruby Bridges heard only racial threats. Ruby was very smart and a fast learner. Ruby was very quick at catching on. You should have seen her to have been in the first grade.
Her mother thought that Ruby would be able to make something of herself in the world. To do something that no other black child had done. Her father was worried that she would be hurt. His boss fired him because of his little girl going to the white people's school.
Ruby was also an "A" honor roll student. She loved to do work and also loved her teacher very, very much. The other teachers in the school did not like Ruby nor wanted to teach her. The kids did not have a problem with Ruby, it was just what their parents said about Ruby. That would affect the class and other students because they could not play with Ruby.

Ruby was also not afraid of anybody. Why? Because she and her mother prayed every night about what happened in school or what she heard while going into the school. Ruby said that she prayed for what the people said about her. And that's what her mother told her - to always keep your hand up.
The reason why she is my hero is because she did not let anybody get in her way or let what people say get in her way. She inspires me because she ended racism and from then on whites and black were allowed to go to the same school.
