Ruby Bridges

What is a hero? I think a hero is one that shows great courage. She's a hero because even though people didn't like her and said bad things to her and about her, she still went to school. Also she was brave to walk in front of the mob. She's too little to hear those kinds of things. But most importantly she still went to get her education. I chose Ruby Bridges because people don't really talk about her. Also it would be a great chance to talk about her now and so people can get to know her.

Did you know Ruby Bridges was born 1954 and lived in Mississippi? She had a very poor family. She is still alive, and she is now 44 years old. Ruby Bridges had four sons and got married. She got married to Malcom H. Read. Ruby raised her four sons as well as her brother's four daughters.

Ruby went to Frantz Elementary School. In November on 1960 Ruby was drove to school. When she walked up in front of the mob she prayed. From until that day on she prayed every time she went to school. In Ruby Bridges' adult life she began to volunteer as a parent liaison three days a week. She is now chair of the Ruby Bridges Foundation, which she formed in 1999 to promote "the values of tolerance, respect, and appreciation of all differences."

After the book she made, Ruby Bridges said a memorable quote. She said "I now know that experience comes to us for a purpose, and if we follow the guidance of the spirit within us, we will probably find that the purpose is a good one." She symbolizes respect. Well, because even though she's black and she's going to a white school she doesn't disrespect any of the other kids. "Some white families continued to send their children to Frantz despite the protests, a neighbor provided her father with a new job, and local people babysat, watched the house as protectors, and walked behind the federal marshals' car on the trips to school."

Now that you know about Ruby Bridges do you like her? I think she's a lot of people's hero. I know she's my hero because she walked in front of an angry mob and was still confident. I was surprised she didn't win any awards considering she's famous. Ruby Bridges was motivated by people when they told her they would poison her and another had a black baby doll in a wooden coffin and protested with it outside the school. That is why I chose Ruby Bridges to let people know more about her.
