Roald Dahl

by Mitch from Grand Rapids

Roald Dahl was born in 1916 in Llandaff, Wales. His Parents' names were Harold and Sophie Dahl. When Roald was still only three years old, his seven-year-old sister, Astri, died from appendicitis. Weeks later, his father came down with pneumonia at the age of fifty-seven. He died a week later. Dahl's mother, however, decided not to return to Norway to live with her relatives, but to remain in Wales since it had been her husband's wish to have their children educated in British schools. So she respected her husband's wishes.

At the age of nine he was sent away from his family for boarding school. He pulled a prank on a mean candy store owner. He placed a dead mouse in the gob-stoppers, and she got really scared when she saw it. The next day the headmaster of the school lined the kids up and the store owner pointed to them and said that’s “them.” They all were beat with a cane.

Every summer when his family went back to Norway, they saw their grandparents, and went to a different island. They loved exploring and swimming. One summer his oldest sister brought her boyfriend and Roald's family didn’t like that. His sister’s boyfriend was always smoking his pipe. One-day Roald Dahl put goat poop in his pipe and when he smoked, he started choking vigorously and everyone thought he was really injured. It gave his sister quite a shock.

Hardships of Roald Dahl’s life would be that his sister, dad and mother died. Also that at a very young age he was sent away from his family to go to boarding school. But despite all of his hardships he accomplished many great things, like being team captain for his school's five team.

He’s my hero because I admire him. I admire him because he was very courageous, and he never gave up. Also he owned up to his to his mistakes. That’s why I admire him.

Roald Dahl is my hero because of being a courageous person and always wanting to learn new things. That’s why he’s my hero.
