Rene Geronimo Favaloro was a surgeon who created a very important surgery called a coronary “Bypass”. This was used and still is used around the world. This has saved a lot of people’s lives including my grandfather.

He was born on July 12th, 1923. He was raised in a neighborhood of “La Plata” called “El Mondongo”. He was a soccer fan when he was young but when he got into high school he got interested in being a doctor. After finishing high school he was accepted as a student in a Medical University of La Plata.

Favaloro saved many people’s lives, but he also wrote books. By the year 2000, Argentina was in an economic and political crisis. Favaloro was in debt (75 million dollars) to the government. So he decided to commit suicide by shooting himself in the heart.

Following his death, people discovered that he had sent a letter to the president of Argentina that had never been read. It said, “I need money to progress with my foundation”. I think that if the president had read that letter he would have given Favaloro the money and he wouldn’t have killed himself.

He is my Hero because he saved my grandfather. He was a really nice person, who saved many people. Rene Favaloro created an important surgery which helped people around the world, and it’s still used today.
