Rosemarie Hathaway

The word “hero” can mean a lot of different ideas to different people. To me, a hero is someone who is willing to lay down their own life for someone they love or someone they don’t know at all. A hero is someone that can be brave and strong in the mind and body when other people can't. A hero has to be someone people look up to in times of need or as just a role model. All these characteristics fit my hero; Rosemarie “Rose” Hathaway.

The series Vampire Academy

Rose Hathaway is a 17 year old dhampir in the book series, The Vampire Academy. A dhampir is someone that’s half vampire and half human. Rose’s best friend is Lissa Dragomir, a spirit user, who she is specially bonded to. When they were younger Rose and Lissa had got into a car accident which killed Lissa’s family and Rose. Lissa’s power allowed her to bring Rose back to life, bonding them, allowing Rose to see into Lissa’s mind. Rose is a Guardian, dhampir that protects vampires, in training that falls in love with her personal instructor, Dimitri Belikou.

Rose shows bravery when she has to put aside what Rose wants to save Lissa. Lissa was kidnapped by Victor, a dying man, which wants Lissa to use her spirit powers to heal him. When Rose goes to tell Dimitri about Lissa, their chemistry ignites, due to a lust charm that was put on Rose’s necklace. Dimitri succumbs to the thoughts of passion until he realizes something is wrong and pulls off the necklace. They both come to their senses and go find Lissa. Rose was very scared for Lissa, but showed bravery when she fought to find Lissa no matter what came up.

Rose risks her life to help save the academy, when it goes under attack by strigoi, evil, undead vampires that kill innocent people for blood. Strigoi are killing students and teachers; when Rose and other guardians step up to try and save as many people as they can. The guardians run out all the strigoi and come up with a plan to save to people that were taken by the strigoi. Rose goes inside the strigoi hide out to fight and save her fellow students and teachers. Rose was a hero in that moment because she risked her life to save her friends and teachers.

The last book in the Vampire Academy series

I admire Rose for her strength in body and mind. Dimitri gets turned into a strigoi: Rose has to have strength to kill her lover. Rose quotes," I have to find Dimitri and kill him for his own safety."(Mead, Richelle. Vampire Academy. August 16,2007: Razorbill6 books) When Rose finds Dimitri, they physically fight, till Rose pushes Dimitri off a bridge. Then Dimitri comes back and tries to kill Rose again. Lissa, using her spirit powers, brings Dimitri back to a dhampir. Rose had to be strong in her mind, to grip the concept that she had to kill the man she loved. She was also strong in body, to physically take down Dimitri.

Even though Rose is a fictional character, she is still my hero. Rose is now Lissa’s guardian, protecting her throughout her life. Even though Rose and Dimitri had a really hard time in their relationship, they are happily together, ready to move on to the next step in their lives together. Rose is my hero because she is brave, strong, and willing to lay down her life for others. Rose is great hero and can be a hero to many people (Mead, Richelle. Vampire Academy.
