It is hard to speak about my hero, I guess there isn’t only one or I just can’t find one at this moment in my life. But still I am going to mention someone who I respect and admire and I think that he deserves to be a local or even a national hero. That is General Rudolf Maister. General Maister has saved this region of Slovenia from the possession of Austria. He mobilized volunteers who became his soldiers and they took control of Maribor and Radgona, two important towns in the region of Styria.
He was born in 1974 in Kamnik. He visited primary school in Kranj and later he visited different military schools mostly in Vienna and served in different places of Hapsburg monarchy. He became an officer in 1985, when he was promoted to lieutenant. Later he was also promoted to colonel. Finally in the year 1918 he got promoted to the rank of general, by the Slovenian National Community. After the Plebiscite he was also the president of the commission for delimitation of the border with Italy. In 1923 he retired as a division general and received the order of the White Eagle. He also spent his life as a poet and an artist. Maister died at the age of sixty in the town of Unče. Today his statue stands in Maribor and in his birthplace Kamnik.
I think he is important for our nation, who knows what would happen if it wasn’t for him and of course also for the volunteers that fought under his command. Would Slovenia be even smaller, or would there be just another hero to save this land. He definitely made a difference and the people should remember him as a hero that fought for this country.
