Robin Roberts

by Sydney Reddick from San Diego

"Nothing is impossible. The word itself says "I'm possible!"(Audrey Hepburn).  This quote from Audrey Hepburn quote has been the motto for Robin Roberts throughout her cancer years to survive. Currently a news anchor for Good Morning America has faced her battles with cancer twice (breast cancer and MDS). In 1990 Roberts was the first African American to anchor on ESPN which later made her TV break out on Good Morning America, and more other TV shows. In the late 2013 she received the Author Ashe Award for her strength in beating cancer, bone marrow transplant, her charity work, being on Good Morning America and ESPN, and her basketball career. Some people only know her for her morning show, even though she's been on ESPN for a long time, when she had to prove to her audience that she deserves to on it. Since she has been on the big screen she tries to take the attention off of her and give it to the people who need to tell their stories to/ for helping people. Throughout her hard work ethics and her bravery she has beaten the odds twice, and tries to encourage others to share their stories and get help so they can survive.

Robin Roberts is braver than most people, because she has battled and beaten cancer twice and now has faced challenges in her life. When Roberts was battling cancer she needed to bear it no matter what happened to her body. "Roberts discovered a lump in her breast. A biopsy found in the lump to be malignant; after surgery to remove the lump and some of the tissue, Roberts underwent radiation chemotherapy, causing her hair to fall out"(biography Roberts). This is when she found out that she had cancer and when she had to put a brave face on and start the hard battle to beat. She knew that she had to do something when she found the lump, so she started chemo and didn't care if her hair fell out, she just wanted to survive, get healthier, and get back on Good Morning America. During her chemo she didn't really care what people thought of her without hair or a wig, she just wanted to get back to her normal self."Have created a special bond with her viewers. In 2007, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Instead of retreating from the public eye, she decided to stop wearing a wig on TV after she lost her hair"(media about Roberts ). She didn't care if getting chemo was a result of losing hair; and she went on TV without a wig to show people getting better are all what should matter. She wanted to show people who are going with cancer can go with baldness and shouldn't care what people think, because they should just ne worried about beating cancer. These quote of Robin Robertsshows that she was brave enough to go on TV to share her story with others. Also she wants to show people that they shouldn't worry about what others are saying about  them or judging them for not having hair.  Robin Roberts was determined to beat cancer and to come back to Good Morning America as quickly as possible.

No matter what happened in Roberts' life she is always determined to make it better or more successful than what it was before. "The doctors tell me that I am going to be a tremendous help in me beating this. And George bottom I'm going to beat this "(Roberts). Roberts is the kind of person who gets set on one thing and does it. She was determined about beating cancer and she did, so whatever she put her mind to something she was going to do it. With her diagnosed with MDS, she knew she was going to take her body over the top and it's going to go through a lot, but she just wanted to get better. "She took a piece of paper and wrote on it: "ESPN by 1990.'' My coaches taught me that talk is for dreams, but when you write it done it becomes on a goal"(black enterprise). Her coaches taught here that talk is talk and when it's written down it become a goal that can be achieved in life. She would write stuff down all of the time, so she could look at them as a goal that could be possible in her life. And it's a good way to plan the goal out with the entire plan. She stuck with this activity, because it did work with becoming the first African American women to be an anchor on that show.

Throughout Robert's life she has faced challenges and instead of giving up, but she used her work ethics and bravery to continue on with her life without having these roadblocks be in her way. During her career on TV she has won plenty of awards, but her latest on she is most proud of, because it was an Author Ashe Award which is a huge deal with dealing with her courage, bravery and being an inspiration to others. Roberts is a hero to me, because she taught me that no matter what happens in life people should never give up and keep living life, because it can always get better. Also she has taught me that facing the odds can work in your favor and to get a better life. I believe that people should take her advice, because it worked well with her and many others who have faced with life threatening diseases.
