My Hero is the one and only "Sugar" Ray Robinson. Sugar Ray was an American boxers from the 1940's to the 1960"s and is described as the best boxer of all time by many. He was not only swift on his feet but he could knock anybody out with either one of his hands. He had amazing resilience meaning he could take a punch or two or five or many in fact he was never knocked out although he had a TKO on his record it was a bit of controversy. His record stands at 173-19-6 with 2 no counts. He was so strong he accidentally killed a man by the name of Jimmy Doyle in the ring during a title fight and he had even dreamed it would happen the night before.
Here is why he is my hero.
Not only was he the greatest fighter ever he was also one of the most generous people ever. He was a person who not only entertained the public audience but he created his own foundation called The Sugar Ray Robinson Youth Foundation. He also was a strong fighter for civil rights for African Americans. When he was in the army he and his buddy Joe Louis got into a fight with the Military Policemen because they threatened Louis if he used a phone booth. So not only did he go against racism but he did it in front of well armed and trained military soldiers that takes a whole lot of guts.
He was born on May 23rd 1921 and died on April 12th 1989 of Alzheimer's disease and diabetes at the age of 67. He had 2 known sons and Ronnie and Ray Robinson. He had been married three times and had one kid with each of the first two. His His third marriage ended at his death.
In spite of his fighting career, he was a Civil Rights fighter and a generous donor to charities all over the world as well as the charity he started. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in the early 1980's and died in 89. Sugar Ray who is also known by his real name, Walker Smith Jr., loved his family dearly even though it was rumored that he beat them all the time but I don't think he did it.
I think it is clear that i chose Sugar Ray as my hero because of his career and his life out of the ring as well. He not only fought for Civil Rights but he also made his own charity and donated to many other charities as well. He was the best boxer in history and probably the most generous people who ever lived. He taught me to keep fighting even when it seems like there is nothing to fight for good things will eventually happen. He was a saint in the ring and a saint out of the ring, he will be missed.
