Roland Belford (Bon) Scot

by Jernej from Maribor

Roland Belford “Bon” Scot was born on 9th July 1946 in Kirriemuir in Scotland to a musical family. They moved to Australia at the beginning of the fifties where he learned to play a lot of musical instruments and where he later studied music. Even when he was a small child he showed his musical talent and that’s the reason he got accepted to one of the best musical academies. When he finished his education, he got involved with a lot of musical bands, for example “The Spectros”, “The Valentines”,… he brought them to the top of the Australian music charts. But the best band, he was a part of, was and still is AC/DC.

At first he tried out to be the drummer in the band, but after hearing his voice, and the ability to sing in 5 octaves, the leaders of the band decided he needed a microphone and not drumsticks in his hands. He joined AC/DC in 1974 and he was their lead singer until he died in 1980. At that time he had brought the band to the top of the world charts; their album “Highway to hell” is the second most sold album in history. Some say “if it wasn’t for him, AC/DC wouldn’t be what they are today.

So all in all he was a great and talented man with only one weakness, the one that also brought him to his knees, as they say: ”The bigger you are, the harder you fall”. He died of an overdose of alcohol and probably drugs, on an after show party. But nevertheless Roland Belford “Bon” Scot is and always will be remembered as one of the best rock singers in history. Many people will remember him as he cannot be replaced. The one of very few people who made a big difference to the world, just imagine how would life be without rock music.
