Rodney Mullen

by Cameron from Cornwall

Just follow what makes you you.
In my opinion, a hero is someone you can depend on, someone who you feel is safe, maybe even a brave being. To me, it's someone I look up to, someone that has had an impact on me. Rodney Mullen, the person I have chosen to do this project on, is a professional skateboarder, most people know him or call him "the king of land." The reason behind his famous nickname would be because he is the skateboarder who first; one of the first professionals, second; he invented many of the flatland tricks, third; he is the best street skater there is and ever will be. Rodney was born August 17th, 1966 in Gainesville, FL but grew up in Hermosa Beach, CA. Rodney lived a happy and very wealthy life, his father being a doctor. Rodney could not start skateboarding until the age of 10. His father didn't want him to "fall into the wrong crowd".If there were any words to describe what makes Rodney a hero, they would be: talented; the fact he has made over 40 of his own custom tricks. Creative; being one of the first skateboarders and the tricks he has made. Impossible; they are each very complicated to pull off. Organized; Rodney owns his own skateboard company, World Industries. Selfless; Mullen has always been big on charities and likes to help out the less fortunate by giving away skateboarding gear to younger kids that can't afford it. Rodney Mullen just lives his life the way he wants to and will not let anyone change that fact or the goals he sets for himself.
Two videos, showing and presenting "the king of land".Rodney has accomplished many goals. To start, he became a pro skateboarder at the age of 14. He has placed first in every contest he's been in, except for one, when he was sick. He's a big inspiration, which is the reason I have picked him. He has inspired me, maybe even plenty more, his famous quote "Just follow what makes you you." shows that if you set your mind to one thing, you can accomplish it. His quote "Just follow what makes you you" has inspired me to believe that whatever I want to do and am good at, I should keep doing it. It set a good example for me, because when I was younger at the age of 5 or 6 I started playing hockey. I wasn't any good of course because I never played before. When I was 10, 11 that's when I got my first Tony Hawk Pro Skater game and I first heard of Rodney Mullen, he was the best skateboarder on the game. So later, I decided just to look up biographies on skateboarders, watched a couple of videos and realized he's a unique person.
