Rosa Parks is my hero. Rosa Parks was born February 3,1914 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Her birth name was Rosa Louis McCauley. Her mother, Leona Edwards McCauley, was a teacher. Her father, James McCauley, was a carpenter and a storeman.  She had a younger brother named Sylvester. At the age of two she moved in with her grandparents. In 1929, in eleventh grade, she dropped out of school because her grandmother was sick.  She married at the age of 19 to Raymond Parks in 1932 who was a barber.  Rosa finished her high school degree in 1933.

Rosa Parks was a member of the NAACP. Raymond Parks was also a member of the NAACP. NAACP stands for National Association for the Advancment of Colored People. She became a member in 1943.  Rosa was the secretary until 1956.

December 1,1955 Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat to a white man. Later she was bailed out of jail by her good friends Clifford Durr and E.D Nixon.  December 5,1955 Martin Luther King Jr. and other members of the NAACP started a Montgomary bus boycott. The bus boycott lasted for 381 days.  On November 13,1956, congress ended segregation of all buses. On December 20,1956, the bus boycott was ended.

Rosa Parks received many awards for her brave accomplishments.  She is known as the mother of the civil rights movement.  She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996.  She also received a Congressional Gold Medal in 1999.  Rosa had  an autobiography named Rosa Parks My Story in 1992. Rosa and Raymond worked to provide career training for young people.

On October 24 , 2005, Rosa Parks died in Detroit, Michigan at 92 years old. She died of natural causes.  Rosa Parks is my hero because she didn't give up her seat on the bus and she is important in history.
