Rick Hansen's full name is Richard Marvin Hansen. Rick Hansen was born in Port Alberin, British Columbia. He grew up in Williams Lake, British Columbia. His dad was a school professor, and his mom took care of him. He had three sisters: Emma, Alana and Rebecca. When he was young, Rick Hansen got thrown off a truck, and became paralyzed from the waist down. Even though he was now handicapped, Rick Hansen believed that he wanted to do something good, and he became an athlete and an activist for people with spinal cord injuries.

Rick Hansen traveled 40,000 km in his wheelchair marathon, including 34 countries, and four continents in two years. During his marathon, he said he felt sadness, pain, bravery, and courage. The difficult feelings were the sadness and the pain. The good feelings were the bravery and courage. Rick Hansen made no bad decisions in the marathon.

Three lessons that people can learn from Rick Hansen are: #1 Never give up, #2 Never give up on your dreams, even if you are handicapped, and #3 Everybody can do things like Rick Hansen. Rick Hansen did not have any enemies on his marathon. I admire him because I would not have had the guts to do what he did, and I think he is brave.

I think a hero is someone who does things to help others. Rick Hansen is a hero because, like Terry Fox, he rasied money for cancer research. A hero is different from being simply well known, because a rock star is well known, but rock stars don't often do anything special for others. But Rick Hansen is a hero because he did the Man In Motion Marathon. Rick Hansen's hero was Terry Fox. Rick Hansen is still alive today. He lives in Richmond, British Columbia, and is the president and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation. His wife and sisters are all alive.

Rick Hansen has won the Companion of the Order of Canada { March 29, 1988}, Order of British Columbia {1990}, Canada's Sports Halls of Fame {2006}, UBC Sports Hall of Fame, National Disabled Athlete of the Year {1979}, W.A.C. Bennett Award {BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum} {1994}, Honorary Doctor of Laws UBC, Honorary Doctor of Letters McGill University {2006}. Three schools have been named after him: Rick Hansen Secondary School in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Rick Hansen Secondary School, in Mississauga, Ontario, and Rick Hansen Elementary School, in London Ontario.

I choose Rick Hasen as my hero because he traveled around the world, and I have learned a lot from studying him.
