The theme of this year’s Laguna Hero Fest is World Oceans Day, a perfect match for Young’s devotion to the Pacific Ocean and its inhabitants, which shines through in the dramatic works throughout his four-decade long career. Young connected with the ocean as a young boy near his family's El Moro trailer and while working as a lifeguard at Scotchman's Cove. His tour of duty as a marine was in Hawaii, where his interest in the ocean continued to grow. He enjoyed traveling and exploring the waters off California, Hawaii, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Young attended U.C. Santa Barbara as an art major from 1956-1958, before graduating from Otis Art Institute with an M.F.A. in 1962. Afterwards, Young returned to Laguna Beach, where his expressive undersea life paintings were first exhibited at the 1959 Festival of Arts. He was also a creative force behind the formation of Laguna's Sawdust Art Festival.

Young’s vibrant and expressive undersea life paintings will be on display at the Laguna Hero Fest. His widow Debbie Young and daughter Charlotte will be on hand to celebrate Young’s contribution to Laguna’s art community from 1959 until his death in 2012.

The MY HERO Project will also honor the winning photographers of the Laguna Bluebelt 6th Annual Photo Contest at the June 8th event.

"Robert Young was the wonder of our time as far as stubbornly hewing to the act of painting as his ideal."
-Dion Wright
