Ruby

by Caroline from Atlanta

Lise Sentell from Zelienople, Pennsylvania, was half way through her first pregnancy when her horse, Ruby, saved her daughter's life. Sentell was riding Ruby through trails by herself. Stentell was about three miles away from home when her horse became her hero. Since Sentell trusted Ruby, she decided to wade into a pond to let Ruby have a drink of water, thinking that Ruby would not slip. She did not realize that the bottom of the pond was more slippery than she thought. When Ruby was done drinking, Sentell turned Rudy towards dry land. Going up the slick bank of the pond, Ruby slipped and both Sentell and Ruby fell backwards into the water. Sentell tried to get away from Ruby knowing if Ruby kicked out at her both Sentell and her child to be could be seriously injured. She tried to emergency dismount but her leg was stuck in the stirrup. As she struggled to get loose, Sentell kept worrying about Ruby kicking out and hurting her. Finally, Sentell yelled at Ruby to stop and as soon as Ruby heard her rider, she stopped moving. Sentell quickly got her foot out of the stirrup and bolted towards the shore of the small pond. Ruby patiently waited for Sentell to get out of the water before she moved, not wanting to hurt her. As soon as Sentell was on dry land, Ruby swiftly jumped out of the water. Both Ruby and Sentell were drenched from their fall but did not have a scratch on them. Ruby’s relationship with Sentell and her careful manner saved both Sentell and her child. Now, at the age of 25, Ruby is still careful when Sentell’s six year old daughter, Tessa, is playing near her.
