Shel Silverstein

“Dare to reach out your hand into the darkness, to pull another hand into the light.” This quote was said by Norman B. Rice. Shel Silverstein proved this because his songs and poetry lifted people’s spirits. His children’s poetry was fun and humorous. They were based on feelings that children have and thoughts that may go through their minds. His poems didn’t always make sense, but they did lift others from the “darkness.” They made people laugh and feel good. Shel Silverstein's talent truly did prove this quote right.

Shel Silverstein had many hobbies, some had later turned into jobs. He was a poet, songwriter, musician, composer, cartoonist, screenwriter, and author. His real name was Sheldon Alan Silverstein. Shel Silverstein was born on September 25th, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. He was later stationed in Japan and Korea.

Shel Silverstein's poems were not like any other poet’s poems. They were mostly funny not romantic or based on romance. Since he didn’t study other poets, he developed his own writing style. Some of his popular pieces are, “Where the Sidewalk Ends”, “A Light in the Attic”, “Smart”, and the book, "The Giving Tree." "The Giving Tree" was one of his most popular books.

Shel Silverstein had many strong points in his career. His song, “I’m Checking Out” was nominated for the Academy Awards in 1991. He also won a Grammy for, “Where the Sidewalk Ends.” His book "The Giving Tree" was very successful. Shel Silverstein never planned to write children’s literature, but was successful at it.

Shel Silverstein's contribution changed many people’s views of the world. He taught people how to enjoy life, and to cope with the difficult stages in life. His stories put a smile on many kids’ faces and taught them about life. He showed adults what really goes on in kid’s heads. Shel Silverstein died in Key West, Florida, on May 10th, 1999.
