Women

Susan B. Anthony

by Melissa from Wallingford

Anthony was born on February 15, 1820, and lived in Massachusetts. She believed that women should have the same rights as men. She believed this because she saw how men got to do jobs and vote, while women didn't get a say in what happened in the society. She believed they should. Anthony created the Women's Suffrage Foundation to help stand up for women's rights. She also would do multiple protests and even started her own newspaper for protesting. Her beliefs and actions were important because if it wasn't for her, today women wouldn't have the right to vote and they would have a lot less say in what went on in their society.

Anthony created the Women's Suffrage Foundation in 1869 to help other women protest for their rights. She also made "The Revolution", a newspaper that helped the women protest. This meets my definition of a hero because she took action in what she believed in to help other women. She became the president of the Women's Suffrage Foundation, with her friend Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Together, they fought against women suffrage for 50 years. "The Revolution" was a weekly magazine created by Anthony and her association in 1868. It helped them protest for womens' rights and talked about womens' suffrage. Anthony's motto for her newspaper was "Men, their rights, and nothing more. Women, their rights, and nothing less."

Anthony was also known for her protests, and one of her most famous protests was in 1872. This meets my definition of a hero because she showed immense bravery and stood up for what she thought was right. In the protest in 1872, Anthony led a group of women and had them vote in Rochester. She was then arrested for two weeks. Then, in 1873, she again tried to vote in a city election. She was put on trial, but refused to pay her fine after being convicted. She soon succeeded in not having to pay the fine. After such bad experiences, Anthony dedicated her life to protesting and advertising the rights of women. A famous quote she said was "Failure is impossible".

There is a flip side to this, too. Many men despised Anthony's actions. They would call her names and made fun of her. They would often say stuff like "she's stiff, aggressive, a dangerous effect on wives and mothers, cruel, constantly howling", and much more. They tried to stop her by arresting her each time she tried to vote or protest. They also made her pay fines for protesting, but it never worked. Anthony always fought back. She would avoid paying the fines and would often succeed in doing so. She would also continue protesting, no matter what the men did to her. She never gave up, and the men soon gave up on fighting back.

Anthony's actions benefit our lives today in many ways. She gave women today the right to vote and have a say in things. She gave girls and women the rights to keep unborn children if the fathers died. If it wasn't for Anthony, women would still be in danger of terrible laws of men, such as abortion. She deeply believed in the right for women to vote, and now, ladies, we have a say in what goes on in our state or town! Women now have more freedom of speech. Just remember that this wouldn't be possible without Anthony's protests and persistence to keep fighting for womens' rights.

A hero. What do you think is a hero? Who do you think is a hero? A hero to me is someone who people look up to. They are someone caring and helpful. They don't need super powers to do good things. A hero, to me, is someone who enjoys helping other people, and doesn't hesitate to. They are someone who takes action in what they believe in to help others, and are very brave when they do it. My hero is Susan B. Anthony . She's my hero because she helped fight for women's rights in the 19th century. She didn't hesitate to help other women win the rights that they deserved. She was the founder of the Women's Suffrage Foundation in 1890, and became president of the foundation to prove women have their rights. In this essay, I will prove that Susan B Anthony is a hero because she never hesitated to help others. She stayed true to what she believed in and didn't back down. She was very brave!
