Stephen Fry

by Conor from Toronto

Stephen John Fry was born August 24th, 1957 in Hampstead, London, United Kingdom, although he spent most of his childhood in Booton, Norfolk, UK. His father, Alan, was an inventor and physicist. His mother, Marianne, didn't work. Fry had a troubled childhood. He was expelled from multiple high-end prep schools. This culminated with him being arrested for credit card fraud and spending three months in prison.

After prison, he passed his entrance exam and was admitted to his college of choice at Cambridge. While studying at Cambridge, he met his future friend and long-time collaborator, Hugh Laurie. Laurie was the head of the 'Footlights', Cambridge University's resident sketch comedy group.

After Cambridge, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie became a sketch comedy double-act under the name Fry & Laurie. In the 1980s, they produced many great TV shows including A Bit of Fry & Laurie and Jeeves & Wooster. They also each starred in the legendary English period sit-com 'Blackadder', starring Rowan Atkinson.

Following this period of great success, they largely went their separate ways. Laurie went on to take the title role in the hit American med-drama "House". Fry stayed in the UK. He has since become known as a 'national treasure' and has starred in many films. He has also written four novels and two autobiographies. He has written two plays and directed a film, Bright Young Things (2003). He is now the host of the panel-quiz show QI.

Fry is an openly gay man. He also suffers from cyclothymia, which he jokingly refers to as 'bi-polar lite'. He campaigns fervently for both of these causes. In 2006, he released a two-part documentary, Stephen Fry: The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive. Also, in 2013, he released another two part documentary, Stephen Fry: Out There, about being gay in different areas around the world. The BBC distributed both documentaries.
