Steven Gerrard

by Samuel from Tampico

Deciding on who was I going to write about was more difficult than I thought. It took several minutes to make the final decision. I thought about artists but I said, no. I thought about musicians but I said, no. I thought about people who have changed the world but again I said, no.

According to the Greek mythology, a hero was originally a demigod. A demigod is the son or daughter from one immortal and one mortal parent. Nowadays we don't see in that way to a hero. A hero can be any person, for example, if someone suffers an accident and a person helps, he can be a hero. The most famous heroes are the ones that we know from the comics and stuff. One of my favorite heroes is Batman, since I was a kid I have loved that character. But this essay is not about Batman, it is about even a better hero.

Steven George Gerrard is an English football player. He has played for Liverpool Football Club during all his career. That is something that many people, including me, admires about him, the love for the shirt of his team. He could accept offers that others teams have him during all this years but he rejected them and stayed in the same club. He captains both Liverpool FC and the English national team. His football career began early. When he was nine years old he joined the Liverpool Academy and later, around when he was seventeen, he signed his first contract with the LFC. He was offered to move out to another team on 2003 but he decided to stay in Liverpool, and the next season, they won the most important tournament at football clubs level in the world, the UEFA Champions League, with him as captain. The final of the season 04-05 is one of the most dramatic finals in football history. On half time Liverpool was down 3-0 but they recovered and won by penalties. Gerrard made the first goal for his team and achieved a penalty on the regular time. That is the biggest honor he has in his career.

He has been described as one of the greatest English midfielders in history and it's the Liverpool football club's second favorite player, just behind the club's legend Kenny Dalglish, of all time according to the club magazine. He has several nicknames, 'Stevie G' is one of them but my favorite one is 'captain fantastic'. He is a true leader. In every match he leaves everything on the field and supports his team. He is always encouraging his team mates. He has never backed down the club during the tough times.

He is my favorite player because of how he plays and his attitude. Without him maybe Liverpool wouldn't be my favorite football club. Without him Liverpool and the English national team wouldn't be what it has been this last few years. He has given so much to football and to the people, becoming a legend and an idol. He is an example inside and out the field. This is why I consider Stevie G my hero.
