Born in 1930 to William Thomas, Jack lived in Swansea, a city in Wales. He was considered a Newfoundland dog, and earned the name "Swansea Jack" through the miraculous rescues from the River Tawe in Swansea. He first saved a 12-year old boy in 1931, however his more famous rescue came later.

His most famous rescue was witnessed by many. Jack saved the life of a swimmer in front of a crowd and was awarded a silver collar. However, he was not nearly finished with his life-saving. Jack reportedly rescued 27 more people from what was known as the most dangerous river in Wales. For his heroic rescues, Swansea Jack was named "Dog of the Century" and received the "Bravest Dog of the Year" award, a silver cup from the Mayor of London. He lives on as the only dog awarded two bronze metals by the National Canine Defense League. Sadly, Jack passed away in 1937, but a statue and memorial of the beloved dog stands in St. Helen's to this day.
