Spencer Jones

by Catherine from Friville-Escarbotin

One year ago, an American young man who was visiting Europe prevented a terrorist attack on a train near our school. Two of my English-as-second language students wrote an essay about him for MYHERO project.

On August 21st 2015 he caused a machine-gun attack to fail, on the high-speed train Thalys going from Amsterdam to Paris. The attack took place near Arras in Northern France. He has shown great courage in the face of a determined terrorist. With the help of his friends Alex Skarlatos, 22, and Anthony Sadler, 23, and a sixty-year-old British citizen called Chris Norman, Spencer Jones immobilized the killer who was later arrested when the train stopped at the next station. Spencer Jones got a superficial elbow injury and a broken finger while dozens of passengers' lives were saved.

Three days later, Spencer Jones and his three helpers were decorated by the President of France at the Elysee Palace in Paris during a ceremony. They received the Legion d'Honneur medal.

On October the 8th near Sacramento in California, Spencer tried again to help someone, a girl who was being harrassed, but he got stabbed. He is now out of danger.

For us, Spencer Jones deserves to be called a hero because he has shown courage, boldness, coolness and bravery."
