Santiago Londoño

by Paula from Medellín

Santiago Londoño Uribe is a city consular in the city of Medellín. He has worked in urban agriculture, water, education and culture. What he says he likes most about his work is, “Talking to different people and learning from them.” He said that he started helping people when he realized that when he gets together with his family and friends, he can help more people.

Here are some reasons why this person is a hero. When he was going to get married, the people were going to gave him presents. He told them that instead of that they can give money to buy some back packs that contain school materials. (It was written on the invitation). He collected more than 200 back packs. Then I went with him and along with a group of people. They got special kids from Moravia and other poor places like that one. They knew they were studying and it was extremely difficult for them to buy school supplies and they gave them the backpacks. I helped him give the backpacks in a very organized way to the poor kids. I felt very good seeing the happy and thankful faces of those kids. I think in this situation he showed fairness and citizenship. He has also brought education in a democratic way to 10,000 people. He has created a program for clean and free water for 60,000 families. He said, “I wanted to become a city consular because I wanted to make my city a better place to live in.” His hero is Mandela because he created peace under any circumstances while in jail.

Santiago Londoño has helped lots of people. He considers a person a hero when he or she excels, works under any circumstances, and creates better conditions for other human beings. When I asked him what would he do if he could, he responded, “Peace for Colombia.” I asked him if he could because what he wants to do is very difficult. So he probably won`t be able to do it for Colombia, but he can start by trying to do it in Medellìn. I think what he does, he does very well. I think he is very intelligent and has culture. He always has a good reason about the things I ask him. “I feel very honored that I can help people,” he said. I am glad there are people like him in the world.
