Shel Silverstein

by Montana from San Diego

“Listen to the mustn’ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn’ts, the impossibles, and the won’ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me... anything can happen, child, anything can be” –Shel Silverstein (Where the Sidewalk Ends). Shel Silverstein wrote this poem that persuades people not to listen to what people tell you, you can’t do and to reach for your dreams. Shel Silverstein wasn’t always a poet though; when he first started he started out as a playwright. Shel Silverstein is a very inspirational and dedicated hero who strived to try many new and different things.

Shel Silverstein was a very dedicated man, who always worked hard at whatever he did. He was not only a poet. He was also a cartoonist a playwright a performer, recording artist and a song writer. Shel Silverstein “began writing and drawing at a young age” (poets.org) He was a very talented person with an eye for creativity. He liked to mix things up and try new things. Shel was dedicated to everything he did, as a poet or as a playwright he tried his hardest. He always set out with a goal in mind and a plan to achieve it. “If the track is tough and the hill is rough. Thinking you can just isn’t enough!” –Shel Silverstein (Where the Sidewalk Ends) Shel struggled to achieve his goals and dreams like so many do every day. He was author to many books and poems, “The Giving Tree” is only one of his most famous books, and it was also his first. “The Giving Tree” showed kindness and caring and how much love a person could truly give. It was an inspiring read full of love and devotion. In this book Shel Silverstein shows us that love is something of importance and that if you truly loved someone you would give up everything you had for them.

Shel Silverstein is inspirational not only to me but to many others as well. He inspires me through his poems and books. Each poem has its own specific meaning that matters to everyone; it just depends on how you interpret it. Shel Silverstein wrote many poems for children that are often read and inspire them to go out and do something in the world, to do something with their lives. He inspired them to try new things and to live like there is no tomorrow. He encourages them to follow their dreams.

Shel Silverstein is a very inspirational and determined hero who strived to try many new and different things. He lived like he was going to die today. He proved time and time again of his devotion towards writing which inspires so many as it is to do what they love. He inspires me with his words, they are kind and yet the lead you to fulfill your dreams and be anything that you want to be. Even in death his memory lives on in those who read his books. The books which inspire us to live life to its fullest. His Determination shows that when you set your mind to something, anything can happen, anything can be.
