Many of Sam Steele's relatives were in the military, including him. In 1866 he joined the military when the Fenian raids were happening. When he helped the military he also helped in the Red River Expedition, which started in 1870. He went there to backup the Red River Rebellion of Louis Riel. To his disappointment when he arrived to the war the metis already surrendered. The next year he permanently joined Canada's Force artillery. It was Canada's first regular army team. Mr. Steele was always fascinated by the west. He was really interested in the first nations. When he was in the west he spent most of his time learning from the metis. Except later he was assigned to Fort Henry in Kingston, Ontario. He was sent there for the next few years.

Years have passed since he was in the military and now he has sworn to be part of the North West Mounted Police. He became a staff sergeant when he entered the North West Mounted Police. He was one of the officers to lead the training of the recruits. When the Klondike mine was discovered it gave Mr. Steele a great job of responsibility. He was sent to Charles Constantine to gather a squad to bring to the Mine. When Steele's team got to the Klondike mine it was hectic. It took a while, but they controlled the mine and it became one of the most orderly controlled situations of its time.
