Susan Wood

by Alexander from Pickerington

" A hero is someone who you aspire to be like."

What is a hero? This question has puzzled minds since the world first had heroes. Everyone has their own opinion on what makes someone a true hero. I believe a hero is someone who will inspire the people around them to do their best. Anyone can be a hero. My hero is my seventh grade language arts teacher, Mrs. Wood. She showed me my hidden talent. Before seventh grade, I had no idea what I wanted to do when I got older. Today, I work towards becoming a writer. Mrs. Wood inspired me to try my best to write stories. I soon realized that writing was something I enjoyed and something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Mrs. Wood helped me find myself. Now, I honor her as my hero for encouraging me to reach for my goals, and to do what I wanted to do with my life.

Mrs. Wood has been inspiring students to achieve their goals for 30 years. Her dedication to her job is unmatched by my other former teachers. She has a knack for inspiring her students to try their best and find their dreams. Mrs. Wood helped me find my calling when she showed me my talents, and I am forever grateful of her influence. A hero can come in many different forms. A hero can come from anywhere and be anyone, as long as they positively change the lives of the people they meet. Mrs. Wood changed my life by challenging me to be the best that I could be. Today, I wish to honor the commitment she makes to every person she meets, by inducting her into the Hero Hall of Fame.

Everyone needs a hero, and Mrs. Wood says she views her parents as heroes. "They have such a caring attitude to everyone. They give back to the community, and they're very humble people". Mrs. Woods has just finished her 30th year of teaching. She had wanted to be a teacher since she was a little girl and never considered doing anything else. When I asked what she would do if she wasn't a teacher Mrs. Woods replied, "I think I would've probably gone into the music field. I used to play the organ so I might've given piano lessons but in a way that's still teaching". This is why I admire Mrs. Woods. When she does something she devotes herself to it entirely. She is so passionate in everything she does. She tries to inspire her students with their writing. One project she does at the end of each year is the memory books. She has her students write a series of essays and poems, then she puts them into books that can be shown at graduation ceremonies years later. When asked how she tries to inspire her students Sue said," By sharing good literature and good examples, and showing an interest in what they have to say." Every year Susan Woods enjoys getting to know her students. She doesn't like disciplining behavior issues but she will if she has to. She says it's the worst part of her job. I asked Mrs. Woods what she thought made someone a hero. She said," A hero is someone you really look up to or someone you really admire. It's someone who helps you see the good in the world. A hero is who you aspire to be like". I agree with her response, which is why my hero is Susan Woods.
