Sir Alex Ferguson

by Alex from Toronto

One of the most prestigious soccer teams in the world would not be where they are today without their manager. Most people underestimate the power and prominence of a manager in soccer. The manager of a soccer team is one of the most important pieces of a soccer franchise. Without a good manager, a soccer team would not be able to have success. A manager does more than just stand on the sideline; a manager is the inspiration for a soccer team to go out and play their hearts out.

My hero is the current manager of my favorite soccer team, Manchester United FC. Sir Alex Ferguson was born December 31, 1941 in Glasgow, Scotland. He is married to his wife Cathy and together they have three sons, Mark, Darren, and Jason. Of all his sons only one, Darren, decided to follow in his father footsteps and become a football manager. Between 1957 and 1974 Sir Alex Ferguson had a good playing career. He spent his playing time on six different teams and ended his playing career in 1974 with 167 goals in 327 appearances. Sir Alex began his managerial career at age thirty-two in June 1974 as a part-time job with the East Stirlingshire FC. Sir Alex started his full-time management career when he moved to the St. Mirren FC. Sir Alex managed many teams and won many trophies over the course of the next ten years. It wasn't until 1986 that Sir Alex was given the opportunity of a lifetime. On November 6, 1986 Sir Alex Ferguson became the manager of Manchester United FC. Sir Alex is currently the manager of Manchester United and this past year won the championship once again. This recent championship has put Manchester United ahead of Liverpool on the all-time championship list with nineteen trophies. Throughout his whole career Sir Alex has won a total of forty-eight trophies and he has had an unforgettable career.

Sir Alex Ferguson has had many accomplishments in his lifetime and is one of the most prestigious soccer managers to ever set foot on the pitch. When Sir Alex became the manager of Manchester United in 1986 he really turned the team around. A struggling team soon became one of the most popular, talented teams in the world. Sir Alex is one of the most prestigious soccer managers, winning a total of forty-eight trophies in his career as a manager. After winning the championship for a third straight year in 2011 Sir Alex helped Manchester United move past Liverpool to become the all-time championship leader. Sir Alex has won twelve Premier League championships, five FA Cup titles, and two UEFA Champions League titles. All of these achievements are very difficult to achieve and to do it more than once is even more difficult. One of Sir Alex Ferguson's proudest achievements was when the Queen knighted him in 1999. Sir Alex was knighted for his achievements and his contribution to the game of soccer. Being born in England, this is one of the things that really makes Sir Alex Ferguson a real hero to me.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been a huge inspiration to me and so many other people around the world. Every time I watch a Manchester United game I can't help but notice how much class Sir Alex has and how much of an ambassador he is for the game of soccer. Sir Alex is one of the reasons I love to play the game of soccer. He inspires me and provides me with the drive I need to do my best when I am playing soccer. Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the reasons why I wake up to watch soccer at ten o'clock in the morning every Saturday. Sir Alex has made a huge difference in my life and the world. Sir Alex has led me to find one of my passions. Sir Alex has also shown me that you don't need to have the super talent of a professional soccer player to be a premier ambassador of the game. Sir Alex made a difference in the world with his class and his vision to make soccer more than a sport, to make it a world passion. Many people just like me who know that they won't make it as a professional player aspire to Sir Alex because he is well known around the soccer world for what he does. Sir Alex shows people like me that you don't need the superb talent to succeed in the game of soccer, you just need the passion.

Sir Alex has achieved so much over his illustrious career and deserves to be known as one of the best soccer managers to ever set foot on the pitch. So many people in the world today look up to Sir Alex and dream that one day they can achieve the same success that he did. Like many people I have many heroes but Sir Alex is the one and only hero I can look up to and say I want to be like him when I grow up.
